How it Happened
Rhode Island (6-10-1) scored in double digits for the first time this season, defeating Northeastern 18-8 on Tuesday afternoon in Boston.

The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as Chris Hess doubled to drive in Connor Foreman and later pulled off a successful first-and-third double steal with Martin Taveras to score Rhody's second run of the game.

The Rams then put up a five spot in the top of the fourth. Foreman got things started with an RBI double and Taveras followed with a run-scoring single to give URI a 4-0 advantage. Ryan Olmo then ripped his first career home run - a three-run shot that cleared the right field wall - to put Rhody on top 7-0.

Northeastern (10-15) got three runs back in the bottom of the frame but it was all Rhody the rest of the way as the Rams scored two or more runs in each of the final four innings.

Rhode Island made it 11-3 in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single by Jordan Powell, a sac-fly by Derek Gardella and a two-run triple by Mike Corin.

Taveras had an RBI double in the seventh, before scoring on a single to short by Tim Caputo to put URI in front 13-3. The following inning, Hess belted his second triple of the day to plate Corin and TJ Lynch before coming around to score on a pinch-hit single by Mike Sherburne.

The Rams added their final two runs of the game in the top of the ninth as Jimmy Palmer and Mike Foley both scored after being hit by a pitch in back-to-back at-bats. Palmer was pushed across on a single by Sam Johnson while Corin flied out to center to drive in Foley.

The Huskies managed to plate five runs in the bottom of the ninth - thanks in part to a pair of Rhode Island errors - but that was as close as they would get.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Rams finished with new season-highs in runs (18), hits (16) and RBI (17).
  • Of the 14 different hitters Rhody sent to the plate, 12 reached base at least once. The only two who didn't - Derek Gardell and Nick DeRegis - combined for two sac-bunts and a sacrifice fly.
  • URI's 7-8-9 hitters combined for nine runs on nine hits with nine RBI.
  • Of Rhode Island's nine extra base hits, five came from the 7-8-9 spots as Chris Hess (7) had two triples and a double, Martin Taveras (8) doubled and Ryan Olmo (9) homered.
  • Hess was a perfect 4-for-4 on the afternoon, finishing with two triples, a double, a single and a walk. He also stole home, scored five times and drove in three runs. He is the first Ram since 2006 (Dave Savard) to triple twice in a game, tying Rhody's single-game record.
  • Taveras reached three times - on a single, a double and a walk - scored twice and drove in a pair.
  • Olmo was 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
  • Tim Caputo and Mike Corin turned in multi-hit performances as well, as both went 2-for-4 on the day. Corin also drove in three runs and scored twice while Caputo had an RBI and a run scored.
  • Jordan Powell and Connor Foreman each had a hit, a walk and an RBI. Foreman scored twice while Powell crossed the plate once.
  • Each of Rhody's five substitutes contributed to the scoring as well. Mike Sherburne and Sam Johnson both singled to drive in runs while Mike Foley and Jimmy Palmer scored after being hit by pitches. TJ Lynch also scored after drawing a two-out walk in the eighth.
  • Redshirt sophomore Ben Wessel (2-0) earned the win for the Rams, allowing three runs on six hits over five complete. He struck out four and issued just one walk.
  • Freshmen Dom Grillo and Nick Johnson combined to strikeout four of the seven hitters they faced in an inning each of scoreless relief.
  • Redshirt sophomore Matt O'Neil also tossed a shutout inning for the Rams facing the minimum in the bottom of the eighth.
