How it Happened
Rhode Island (14-13-1, 7-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Tim Caputo led off the inning with an opposite-field single, stole second and came around to score on a Ryan Olmo double.
The Rams plated three more in the top of the second - on RBI singles by Jordan Powell, Martin Taveras and Olmo - but Richmond (19-12, 8-2) cut the lead in half with a two-run shot in the bottom half of the frame.
Two innings later, Powell reached via bunt single, stole second, and later scored on an RBI-groundout by Caputo to make it 5-2.
Taveras then blasted his second homer of the season - a two-run shot that easily cleared the wall in right centerfield - in the top of the ninth for the 7-2 Rhody advantage.
Steve Moyers - who had faced just two over the minimum after allowing Richmond its second-inning home run - returned to the hill looking for his first complete game of the season. However, after a hit-by-pitch and a Tanner Stanley double put runners on second and third with no outs, the Rams went to the bullpen. Brad Applin entered the game and quickly ended the threat, getting a strikeout and a pair of fly outs to seal the Rhode Island victory.
Inside the Box Score

- Caputo also scored twice, drove in a run and stole two bases while Powell had two runs, an RBI and one stolen base.
- Taveras ripped his second home run of the season and finished the game with three RBI and two runs scored. He increased his active hit-streak to 10 games - the longest by any Rhode Island player this season.
- Olmo doubled and drove in a pair of runs, extending his reached-base streak to 13 consecutive games - the longest active streak on the team.
- Junior Steve Moyers earned his second win in a row to improve to 2-4 on the season. He allowed just two runs on five hits and recorded season-highs in both strikeouts (8) and innings pitched (8.0).
- Moyers faced just three batters in five of his eight innings pitched.
- Classmate Brad Applin entered the game in the bottom of the ninth, with runners on second and third and no outs. He fanned the first batter he faced and then got back-to-back fly outs to end the game.
