How it Happened
Richmond (20-13, 9-3) needed just one pitch in the bottom of the the first as leadoff hitter Tyler Beckwith drilled Brendan Doonan's first offering over the left field wall for the 1-0 Spiders advantage. Three batters later, Doug Kraeger's two-run homer put Richmond up 3-0.

Rhode Island (15-14-1, 8-4) trailed 5-0 after five complete and did not get on the board until the top of the sixth when Martin Taveras hit his second home run of the series - this time from the right side of the plate - to make it a 5-1 game.

That was as close as the Rams would get however, as they managed just one hit - a ninth-inning single - the rest of the way.

Inside the Box Score

  • Sophomore Martin Taveras scored the lone run of the day for the Rams, recording his second home run of the series in the top of the sixth. A switch hitter, Taveras homered once from each side of the plate this weekend.
  • Taveras also singled in the top of the ninth but was stranded at first base.
  • After being held to a combined six hits over the first two games of the weekend series, Richmond erupted for 13 today -- six of which were for extra bases.
  • Redshirt senior Brendan Doonan made his first start of the season and was charged with the loss, allowing four runs (all earned) on four hits over 1.1 innings.
  • Freshman Dom Grillo tossed one shutout inning before handing the ball over to junior Brad Applin, who fanned four and gave up one run over three innings of relief.
  • Junior Derek Kawlewski threw the final two and two thirds for the Rams, allowing one one run on a pair of hits with two strikeouts.
  • Doonan, Grillo, Applin and Kawlewski combined for zero walks on the day, marking the third time this season the Rams issue no free passes.
  • Dylan Stoops recorded the win for the Spiders. He struck out nine and allowed just one hit over eight innings. Ray Harron then struck out the side in the top of the ninth.
  • The 12 strikeouts on the day matched Rhody's most in a game this season as the Rams also struck out 12 times against #11 North Carolina on Feb. 27.
