How it Happened
Rhode Island (17-17-1, 10-5) was shut out for just the second time this season, falling to VCU (25-18, 8-7) by a score of 7-0 in the series finale. VCU first got on the board in the bottom of the second, and did not allow a Rhody baserunner to reach third until the top of the ninth.
Overall, the Rams stranded seven runners and were out-hit 10-7. Rhody also committed two errors in the field while VCU had none.
What it Means
Due to other results around the Atlantic 10 - namely, losses by George Washington, Richmond and Saint Louis - the Rams remain in a tie (with Richmond) for first place in the conference standings.
Inside the Box Score
- Redshirt Mike Corin and sophomore Martin Taveras both finished the day with two hits. Taveras also reached once via walk, as did senior Mike Sherburne.
- Junior Ryan Olmo, senior Nick DeRegis and junior Chase Livingston each singled in the loss.
- Junior Derek Kawlewski made his first start of the season and was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on five hits and three walks.
- After thee innings, Kawlewski was replaced by junior Steve Moyers, who gave up three runs (one earned) over three frames. He allowed four hits and walked three with a pair of strikeouts.
- Junior Brad Applin gave up one hit - a two-run homer - in an inning and a third of relief.
- Sophomore Taso Stathopoulos struck out both batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth.
