How it Happened
The Rams (22-20-1, 14-7) erupted for a seven-run fourth inning to take a commanding lead early on. Nick DeRegis got the scoring started with a two-run homer before a sacrifice fly by Tim Caputo plated Matt O'Neil to make it 3-0 Rhode Island. Ryan Olmo followed with a three-run shot that put the Rams on top 6-0. Chris Hess was then hit by a pitch before scoring from first on Martin Taveras' double down the third base line.
DeRegis made it 8-0 the following inning as he was walked, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw down, and then crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Massachusetts (14-25, 10-11) scored once in the fifth and once in the sixth to cut into the Rhody lead, but O'Neil pushed the Rams' advantage back to eight (10-2) with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh. URI added two more in the eighth, with a double and a run by pinch-hitter Sam Johnson and an RBI single by pinch-hitter Mike Foley.
Kyle Adie hit a solo shot for the Minutemen in the bottom of the eighth but pinch-hitter Connor Foreman doubled and then scored on an error to make it a 13-3 game in the ninth.
