How it Happened
Connecticut (33-20) put the game away early on, scoring six runs in the top of the first off starter Blaise Whitman. Rhode Island (22-21-1) cut it to 6-2 in the bottom of the frame - when Chris Hess and Martin Taveras scored on a single by Mike Corin - but UConn pushed its lead back to six with a two-run second.

After four and a half scoreless innings, the Huskies tacked on three additional runs in the seventh to move ahead 11-2.

The Rams would not go quietly though. Sam Johnson singled to lead off the eighth, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a double by Ryan Olmo. Rhody then used a two-out rally to tack on two more in the ninth, with Matt O'Neil scoring on an RBI single by Johnson and Mike Foley crossing the plate on a base hit by Olmo to make it an 11-5 game.

That was as close as Rhody would get to completing the comeback however, as a bases-loaded fly out ended the late rally.
