How it Happened
Rhode Island rallied back from a deficit four different times to walk off with a 7-6 win over George Washington in Sunday's Atlantic 10 series finale. The Rams trailed 1-0, 2-1, 5-4 and 6-5 before Martin Taveras' late heroics catapulted Rhode Island to victory in the bottom of the ninth.
With the score knotted up at 5-5 heading into the ninth inning, George Washington (28-16, 12-8) pulled ahead on an RBI double by Kevin Mahala, however Rhode Island (20-19-1, 12-6) refused to go quietly. Facing closer Eddie Mulh - who leads the A-10 with 16 saves - Chris Hess drew a four-pitch leadoff walk to put the tying run on first base. Taveras then roped his first triple of the season into deep right centerfield to drive in Hess and tie the game at 6-6.
After a Mike Corin groundout, the Colonials attempted to intentionally walk Nick DeRegis for the second time in the game. However, catcher Matthieu Robert was unable to handle new reliever Brandon Ritchie's 2-0 offering, which tailed off to the backstop and allowed Taveras to cross the plate safely for the 7-6 Rhody win.
It was the fourth time in the game the Rams came back from a deficit as Mike Corin scored on an RBI single by Connor Foreman to even things at 1-1 in the first, Ryan Olmo blasted a three-run homer to put Rhody up 4-2 in the fifth and then later scored on a Corin single to make it 5-5 in the seventh.
What it Means
Due to Saint Louis' win over VCU and Fordham's win over St. Bonaventure, the Rams remain in a three-way tie first place in the Atlantic 10 standings as Rhody, Fordham and Saint Louis are now all 12-6 in conference play.
