Rams Win First Two Matches at Carmichael Invitational

How It Happened
Senior Cate Seman took over down the stretch as Rhode Island (5-3) outlasted Lehigh at the Art Carmichael Invitational Friday night. It was the second win of the day for the Rams, who also swept Canisius, 3-0. 

With the match tied 2-2, Seman had four kills early in the fifth set to help the Rams build a 10-4 lead. From thetr, Rhody traded points with Lehigh until an ace by junior Callan Kinnan secured Rhode Island's second win of the day.

Rhody got off to a fast start against Lehigh (6-4), winning the first set 25-14. The Rams had 16 kills with just two errors in the set as the offense was clicking on all cylinders. Lehigh came right back to take the second set, 25-17. The Mountain Hawks were the team clicking offensively, as they had 15 kills with just two errors in the second set.

With the match tied after two sets, Rhode Island responded by taking the fourth set, 25-18. The Rams appeared primed to win the match as they led 20-15 in the fourth, but Lehigh ended the set on a 10-3 run to force a deciding fifth set.

Rhody swept Canisius (1-8) with ease in its first match of the day. The Rams did not give up more than 20 points in any of the sets, winning the match 25-20, 25-13, 25-15. The Rhody defense, led by sophomore Marie Gillcrist (6 blocks) and Layne Self (5 blocks), held Canisius to a negative attack percentage (-0.10) for the match.

Inside the Box Scores

  • Senior Cate Seman had her first double-double of the season against Lehigh, recording 13 kills and 12 digs.
  • It was one of three double-doubles in the match for the Rams. Setter Callan Kinnan had 54 assists and 15 digs and Audrey Castro added 10 kills and 14 digs. Kinnan just missed a triple double, as she also had eight kills. 
  • Before the match against Lehigh, senior Franki Darnold was presented with the ball she achieved her 1,000th career kill with last weekend. On Friday, Darnold moved into ninth place in program history and now has 1,048. With 10 more kills, she will move up to seventh place.  
  • Darnold continued her torrid start to the season, recording 37 kills on the day. She had a season-high 22 kills against Lehigh, marking the second time in the last three matches she has reached 20 kills Against Canisius, Darnold had her second double-double of the season, posting match highs of 15 kills and 11 digs.
  • Senior Lizzy Scanlon recorded her 900th career dig against Canisius and finished the night in 12th place in program history with 922. She needs 78 more to become the ninth Ram to reach 1,000 career digs.
  • Rhode Island had a season-best 24 block assists plus two solo blocks in the Canisius match.
  • Freshman Olivia Budinich had a career-high five digs plus three service aces against Lehigh. 
  • Junior Layne Self had 20 kills, eight blocks and just five attack errors in the two matches. Against Lehigh, she had a .423 attack percentage. 

Stat of the Day 
.583 – In the opening set against Lehigh, Rhode Island had a team attack percentage of .583. It was the highest hitting percentage the Rams have had in any set this season.

What's Next 
Rhode Island looks to sweep the competition at the Art Carmichael Invitational when it closes out the tournament with a match against Sacred Heart Saturday at 3 p.m. Canisius and Lehigh will play at noon tomorrow.
