Castro's Career-High Powers Rams to Sixth Straight Win

How It Happened
Rhode Island picked up a pair of 3-1 wins on the opening day of the Seawolves Invite, first defeating host Stony Brook before rallying back from a 1-0 deficit to take down Army.

The Rams (8-3) combined to outscore the Seawolves (2-11) by 17 points over the first two sets, but dropped the third 25-22. With the score knotted at 9-9 in the fourth set, Jessie Blaze served for five straight Rhody points to put the Rams ahead for good. From there,  Rhode Island used a 11-6 run to finish off the Seawolves.

In the second match of the day, URI found itself up 23-21 before Army (6-5) registered four straight kills out of a timeout to take an early 1-0 lead. The Rams' third 25-15 win of the day evened it up at 1-1 before Rhody pulled ahead with a 25-17 victory in the third set. The fourth set featured seven ties and three lead changes, but Rhode Island came out on top (25-21) to seal the team's sixth consecutive win.

Inside the Box Scores

  • Junior Audrey Castro recorded 23 kills (one error, .579) in the win over Army, shattering her former career-high of 14. She also registered her third double-double of the season versus the Black Knights, finishing with 23 kills and 12 digs to go along with two service aces.
  • For the day, Castro averaged 4.25 kills per set (34 total) and 2.50 digs per set (20 total).
  • Junior Callan Kinnan totaled 88 assists over eight sets for the Rams. She had 50 in the win over Army, marking the third time this season she reaches 50.
  • Kinnan also recorded 13 digs, nine kills, three block assists and two aces on the day.
  • Sophomore Marie Gillcrist led the Rams with 10 total blocks, including three solos in the win over Stony Brook. She currently leads Rhode Island in total blocks (46), solos (11) and blocks per set (1.07).
  • Senior Franki Darnold (26) and junior Layne Self (23) combined for 49 kills over the two matches. Darnold also added 10 digs and two service aces while Self registered eight blocks (two solos).
  • Senior Cate Seman led the team in digs, averaging 2.62 per set (21 total). She turned in a season-high 13 against Stony Brook.
  • Sophomore Jessie Blaze and freshman Olivia Budinich each had a pair of aces for the Rams.

Stats of the Day 
69 - Rhode Island converted on a season-high 69% of their sideout opportunities against Army. 

11 – The Rams committed a season-low 11 attack errors in the win over the Black Knights. 

.300 - Rhody's attack percentage has been better than .300 in each of the team's last three matches (.412 - Sacred Heart; .303 - Stony Brook; .397 - Army).
