The Rhode Island women's track & field team is in second place after the first day of competition at the NEICAAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in Boston. With six events scored, the Rams (34) trail first-place Northeastern (58) by 24 points and are 16 points ahead of third-place Maine (18).
PENTATHLON RESULTS
- Senior Janel Conley captured the pentathlon title, setting a new program record with 3,898 points. She finished first in the 60m hurdles (8.70s), first in the long jump (5.67m), tied for first in the high jump (1.68m), was fourth in the shot put (10.51m) and fifth in the 800m run (2:23.19).
- Senior Keiko Hector finished third overall, amassing 3,775 points on the afternoon -- 80 more than last weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship winning performance of 3,695. She placed first in the 800m run (2:14.10), tied for first in the high jump (1.68m), finished third in the long jump (5.36m), was fourth in the 60m hurdles (9.07s) and eighth in the shot put (9.32m).
- Senior Michelle Savoie placed sixth with 3,374 points. Her best finish of the day was second, in the 800m run (2:18.79). She also tied for fifth in the long jump (5.20m), was fifth in the 60m hurdles (9.44s), ninth in the shot put (9.23m) and 12th in the high jump (1.50m).
- Junior Hannah Madison finished in seventh place with 3,321 points. She placed fifth in the long jump (5.20m), sixth in the shot put (9.41m) and 800m run (2:23.83), seventh in the 60m hurdles (9.60s) and 10th in the high jump (1.53m).
FINALS
- Senior Karleigh Manfredi tied for second in the pole vault, breaking her own school record and clearing a height of 3.90m. Junior Amber Sekoll and sophomore Karlee Fowler also competed and cleared 3.45m, but the height was not enough to score points for the Rams.
- Seniors Grace Janes and Aysha Moreino finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the weight throw. Janes' best throw (15.98m) came on her final attempt, while Moreino's 15.75 toss was her third of the day.
PRELIMS
- Seniors Janel Conley (8.70s) and Karen Lobaton (8.94s) qualified for tomorrow's finals in the 60m hurdles. Conley won her heat and finished second overall while Lobaton was eighth.
- Senior Mariah Claudio was the lone Ram to advance out of the 400m prelims, finishing third overall in 55.09s.
- Junior Dyshelle Pemberton grabbed the seventh qualifying spot in the 500m dash, crossing the finish line in 1:16.29.
- Junior Briana Robitaille's 7.86 finish in the 60m dash was good for 10th overall, advancing her to Saturday's finals. She narrowly missed qualifying in the 200m dash as well, finishing .04 seconds out of the top-8.
- Nichole Barger shattered her personal best in the 800m run while also setting a new freshman record at URI (2:11.87). She finished fifth overall and qualified for tomorrow's finals.
