How it Happened
Rhode Island (11-10) won its fifth straight, jumping out to and early lead at Northeastern (8-15) and never looking back. For the second game in a row, the Rams put up runs in the top of the first, this time scoring twice in their first trip to the plate thanks to a two-run triple by Matt O'Neil.

Rhody tacked on five more in the top of the the third to take a commanding 7-0 lead over the Huskies (8-14). After three consecutive walks to Martin Figueroa, Jordan Powell and Matt O'Neil, Figueroa crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 game. Mike Corin followed with a four-pitch walk, setting up Mike Foley's RBI single that put URI on top 4-0. A bases-loaded walk to Greg Cavaliere then pushed across O'Neil and made the score 5-0 Rhody before Kevin Heiss knocked in two runs on a single to right.

After recording outs in their first 10 at-bats, the Huskies eventually got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out, two-run double by Max Burt.

Northeastern scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the ninth, but was unable to do any additional damage as Tyler Barss got back-to-back strikeouts to end the game with a runner on second base.

Inside the Box Score

  • As a staff, the Rhode Island pitchers combined for a season-high 15 strikeouts. Each of the six pitchers the Rams used recorded multiple Ks on the afternoon.
  • The 15 strikeouts were URI's most since also recording 15 against Richmond on May 16, 2014.
  • Redshirt junior Taso Stathopoulos - who missed all of last season with an injury - earned the win in his first appearance since May 23, 2015. After going 676 days without playing in a game, he struck out the side in the first and recorded a 1-2-3 second.
  • After a five-run top of the third for URI, redshirt senior Blaise Whitman replaced Stathopoulos in the bottom of the frame and retired the Huskies in order, fanning the first two hitters before getting an inning-ending fly out.
  • Junior Dom Grillo struck out four over two innings of relief, but allowed two runs - both unearned - on one hit and a pair of walks.
  • Sophomore Mark Silvestri struck out two over two scoreless innings.
  • Redshirt sophomore Cam LaFleur threw a shutout eighth, striking out two with no hits allowed.
  • Redshirt junior Tyler Barss closed things out with a one-run ninth. He allowed three singles and struck out a pair.
  • Offensively, redshirt senior Matt O'Neil and sophomore Kevin Heiss led the way with a pair of hits and two RBI each.
  • O'Neil also walked once, scored a run and stole a base, in addition to belting his first triple of the season.
  • Senior Martin Figueroa crossed the plate twice after drawing a pair of walks.
  • Redshirt senior Mike Corin also walked twice, doubled and scored a run.
  • Juniors Chris Hess, Jordan Powell and Mike Foley each singled and scored once. Foley also drove in a run while Powell reached once on a walk while Hess was hit by a pitch in his fifth plate appearance of the day.
