How it Happened
Redshirt senior Matt O'Neil hit two home runs – including a grand slam – and the offense once again put up big numbers as Rhode Island beat Quinnipiac 15-5 for its sixth straight win.
After a scoreless first inning, Rhode Island (12-10) poured it on over the next three frames, scoring a combined nine runs. Mike Foley led off the second with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a flyout. Sam Ilario also walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Kyle Beaulieu then walked to load the bases for Chris Hess, who singled to right, bringing in Foley and Ilario. With runners on the corners, Hess swiped Rhode Island's third base of the inning. Martin Figueroa followed with a single to right to drive in Beaulieu and Hess to make it 4-0.
Foley helped the Rams pad the lead in the third inning without the benefit of a hit. With one out, he was hit by a pitch. He stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch to put Rhody ahead 5-0. Later in the inning, Hess had his second two-run single of the day to make it 7-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Matt O'Neil hit a solo shot to centerfield. Later in the frame, Jesse Lee drove in Ben Wessel with an RBI single to put the Rams up 9-0.
Quinnipiac (7-14) scored five runs over the next three innings, but the Bobcats never truly threatened the Rhode Island lead as the Rams added two more in the sixth and another four runs in the eighth.
