Rams Sweep Sunday Doubleheader at George Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

How it Happened
Rhode Island (21-16, 10-4 A-10) combined late scoring with a strong showing on the mound in Sunday's doubleheader sweep of George Washington (20-21, 5-7 A-10). Between the two games - a 7-2 win, followed by a 5-3 victory - the Rams scored eight runs from the seventh inning on while five different pitchers allowed a combined five runs (three earned) over 18 innings.

With the first game knotted at one run apiece, Rhody took its first lead of the series in the top of the seventh when Chris Hess drew a bases-loaded walk to score Kevin Heiss. Matt O'Neil followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Jordan Powell and gave the Rams a 3-1 advantage.

GW cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning but stranded the tying run on second base. The Rams later sealed the win in the top of the ninth, thanks to a two-run double by Hess and a two-run homer by Mike Corin.

Game Two got off to a similar start as the Colonials struck first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Corin then put the Rams ahead with his second homer of the day, this time using a fourth-inning shot - that also scored O'Neil and Powell - to give URI a 3-1 lead.

George Washington used a pair of walks and two sacrifices to make it a one-run game (3-2) in the bottom of the fifth, before evening it up at 3-3 two innings later. The tie did not last long however, as a two-run homer by Hess put the Rams back on top 5-3 in the top of the eighth.

Blaise Whitman and Tyler Barss kept the Colonials off the board the rest of the way as Rhody held on to complete the Sunday sweep and keep hold of second place in the Atlantic 10 standings.
