How it Happened
Justin Jewell came up with a huge two-run double in his seventh-inning, pinch-hit at-bat, scoring both Brett McManus and Jordan Powell for what proved to be the game-winning runs as Rhode Island defeated Fordham 5-3 Saturday afternoon at The Beck.

Rhody (24-16, 12-4 A-10) had taken an early lead over the visiting Rams as Mike Corin crossed the plate on an RBI fielders choice ball by Mike Foley in the bottom of the second. Corin struck again in the sixth, this time crushing his 13th home run of the season - an opposite-field shot that also scored Chris Hess - to put URI up 3-0.

Fordham (18-21, 7-9 A-10) evened the score in the top of the seventh however, pushing across three runs after a Rhode Island error and making it a 3-3 ballgame.

Brett McManus then singled with one away in the bottom of the frame, and Jordan Powell was intentionally walked after Kevin Heiss grounded out for the second out of the inning. Jewell - in his first at-bat in over a week - then roped a 1-0 offering down the third base line to score both McManus and Powell and put Rhody on top for good.

Inside the Box Score

  • Redshirt senior Mike Corin hit his 13th home run of the season, tying URI's single-season record which was set by Matt Sullivan in 2005. With 24 career round-trippers, Corin now ranks second all-time at Rhode Island. He is six shy of matching the Mike Le Bel's career record of 30.
  • Sophomore Brett McManus went 2-for-3 with a run scored. He was the only Rhode Island player to record multiple hits in the win.
  • Redshirt freshman Justin Jewell's game-winning hit was the first double of his career.
  • Redshirt junior Matt Murphy tossed 5.2 shutout innings in the no-decision start. He struck out four and allowed five hits with three walks before handing the ball to redshirt senior Blaise Whitman.
  • Whitman got the Rams out of a first-and-third jam in the top of the sixth and recorded two strikeouts in the seventh. He was responsible for all three Fordham runs, although none were earned.
  • Redshirt sophomore Cam LaFleur picked up his first career win for the Rams, improving to 1-3 on the season. He allowed two baserunners over an inning and a third of relief and made an outstanding defensive play to end the eighth inning.
  • Redshirt junior Tyler Barss worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his ninth save of the season and 24th of his career.
