How it Happened
For the second time this season, Matt O'Neil used the long ball to lead Rhode Island to an extra-innings victory, this time sending a grand slam out of the park in the bottom of the 14th inning. The win improves Rhody to 9-1 at home this season while extending Fordham's losing streak to nine consecutive games.
Fordham (18-22, 7-10 A-10) took its first lead of the series with a two-run third inning, and pushed it to 3-0 in the top of the fifth.
Rhode Island (25-16, 13-4 A-10) ended Reiss Knehr's no-hit bid in the bottom of the fifth however as Jordan Powell homered to straightaway centerfield, also scoring Kevin Heiss, who had drawn a one-out walk.
Mike Foley beat out a bases-loaded grounder the following inning, driving in Brett McManus and tying the game at three apiece. URI was unable to take the lead though, leaving the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh as well as stranding a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth.
An outstanding six-inning relief outing from closer Tyler Barss allowed URI to keep the game close, before O'Neil's grand slam finally ended things in the bottom of the 14th.
