How it Happened
Rhode Island (29-17, 17-5 Atlantic 10) dug itself into too large a hole with a sloppy fourth inning and eventually lost to George Mason, 10-9, in the second game of Friday's doubleheader.
The Rams nearly rallied from a seven-run deficit, pulling within one run after falling behind 8-1 early. Rhody had the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base in each of the final three innings, but it was unable to complete the rally as its 10-game winning streak came to an end.
George Mason (23-29, 11-9 A-10) scored eight times in the top of the fourth inning, despite getting just three hits in the frame. The Patriots took advantage of six walks, three passed balls, one wild pitch and an error during the big inning. By the time it was all done, George Mason led, 8-1.
The Rams came back with five runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Corin and Brett McManus walked to open the frame, and Kyle Beaulieu delivered a one-out single to drive in Corin. A walk to Kevin Heiss loaded the bases. Back-to-back two-run doubles by Jordan Powell and Mike Foley cut the deficit to 8-6.
George Mason scratch out two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, pusing its lead back to 10-6. In the bottom of the seventh, Rhode Island chipped away again in the bottom of the seventh. Sonny Ulliana drove in Matt O'Neil with an RBI single, and Heiss brought in McManus with a single through the left side, making the score 10-8.
Powell made it a one-run game when he dropped a single to center, allowing Ulliana to score from second. The Rams had the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base, but Mike Foley flew out to center to end the inning.
Rhode Island again got the potential tying run into scoring position in the bottom of the eighth inning. O'Neil reached on an error with one out and advanced to second when Corin reached on an infield single. McManus hit a line drive that was caught by George Mason second baseman Alejandro Aponte, who was able to double O'Neil off second base to end the inning.
The Rams again got the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth when Ulliana led off the inning with a single up the middle. Jesse Lee came on the run for Ulliana, and Justin Jewell pinch hit for Beaulieu. Jewell worked a walk, moving Lee to second base. Heiss was able to get a sacrifice bunt down with two strikes, putting Lee and Jewell in scoring position. Powell was intentionally walked to load the bases for Foley.
George Mason brought in relief pitcher Tyler Tobin, who retired Foley on a shallow fly ball to right field. Tobin then got Chris Hess, also on a fly ball to right field, to end the game.
