Rhody snapped a five-game slide, knocking off Saint Peter's in three sets Saturday afternoon. The Rams were dominant throughout, racking up 51 kills while holding the Peacocks to a .103 hitting percentage and just 22 kills.
The Rams also had the advantage in digs (87-64), assists (51-20) and service aces (8-5) while converting 71 percent (41-57) of their sideout opportunities.
Overall, the match featured just one lead change and six ties.
Rhode Island 3, Central Connecticut 1
The Rams carried their momentum into the evening match, where they claimed the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-14. The Blue Devils got back in it in the third set, winning 25-16 to cut Rhody's lead in half.
The fourth set went down to the wire as there were 11 ties and four lead changes. A Hazel Brown kill put Rhody up by three (20-17) late but three straight CCSU points tied it up at 20 apiece. The score was tied again at 21-21, 22-22 and 23-23 but back-to-back Rhody points ended it. Gabrielle Shilling had a kill that made it 24-23 Rhody before a solo block by Mariah Paulette sealed the 25-23 win.
Inside the Box Scores
- Sophomore Ella Ratzloff averaged an impressive 6.86 digs per set through Rhody's seven matches. She had 18 in the early match against Saint Peter's and piled on 30 more against CCSU in the late game.
- Ratzloff's 30 digs against CCSU are the third-most ever by a Ram in a single match. The only other Rams to record 30-or-more digs in a single match are Olivia Budinich (34 vs. Davidson, Oct. 21, 2018) and Sue Scott (32 vs. Penn State, Sept. 20, 1986).
- Senior Hazel Brown combined for 10 service aces on the day - four against the Peacocks and six against the Blue Devils - while also adding 17 kills and 24 digs.
- Brown's six aces against Central Connecticut tie former Rams Marie Gillcrist (Saint Louis; Nov. 5, 2017) and Kenny Gardiner (Northeastern, Oct. 23, 1991) and current teammate Annie Ell (Davidson, Oct. 21, 2018) for the third most in single match. In the history of the Rhody volleyball program, only Sue Scott (11 vs. New Mexico, Sept. 20, 1986) and Catie Steffen (7 vs. New Hampshire, Sept. 20, 2014) have recorded more service aces in a single match.
- Redshirt junior Natale Zanellato and sophomore Gabrielle Shilling both were named to the CCSU Invitational All-Tournament Team.
- Zanellato averaged a team-best 4.00 kills per set (40 total) and had three block solos. Shilling compiled 27 kills, 31 digs and four blocks - three of which were solos.
- Junior Annie Ell averaged 12.43 assists per set, racking up 87 total. She also added a pair of aces and three kills.
- Sophomore Mariah Paulette combined for three block solos, 17 kills, 13 digs, two assists and one service ace.
- Junior Claire Chaplinsky also had 17 kills on the day, playing in just four sets for the Rams.

After playing their first nine matches on the road, the Rams return to Kingston to host the Art Carmichael Invitational next weekend. Rhody will play Albany and Boston College on Friday before facing Bryant in the tournament finale Saturday night.
