Rams Win Five-Set Battle With Bryant, 3-2

How it Happened
Rhode Island got back on the winning track Saturday with a five-set victory over Bryant in the Art Carmichael tournament finale.

The first set was back and forth, and Rhody tied it 19-19 after a block assist by Mariah Paulette and Annie Ell. Rhody was able to close out the set 25-21 with a kill by Natale Zanellato.

In the second set, Rhode Island established a 22-18 lead. Bryant responded to keep things close, scoring three straight points to make the score 22-21. An ace by Ell put the Rams up 24-21, but the Bulldogs answered with three straight to tie it 24-24. The score was tied seven more times before Bryant broke away with two points off a kill by Emma McGovern and attack error by Gabrielle Shilling, and took the set 33-31.

The Bulldogs started the third set with a 14-8 lead. The Rams climbed back and tied it at 20, but after a back and forth exchange of points Bryant came out on top 25-23.

The fourth set was also a tight battle, with a kill by Shilling that tied it at 20. An attack error by Claire Wagner gave Bryant the 21-20 lead, but five straight points by Rhody - including two of Hazel Brown's career-high 19 kills - evened the match at 2-2 and forced the fifth set.

Bryant started the final set on a 5-2 run, before the Rams tied it at 6. The score was tied five more times until Rhody was able to seal the victory with three straight points.

Inside the Box Score

  • Senior Hazel Brown had a career-high 19 kills. She added 16 digs for a double-double.
  • Sophomore Ella Ratzloff led the team with 21 digs.
  • Brown and Ratzloff both were named to the All-Tournament team.
  • Redshirt junior Natale Zanellato was one kill shy of matching her career-best. She finished the night with 18.
  • Sophomore Gabrielle Shilling was the third Ram to reach a double-double, adding 10 kills and 18 digs.
  • Sophomore Mariah Paulette led the Rams with four block assists. She added nine kills.
  • Freshman Gillian Klise had a career-best nine kills. She also had a block solo and block assist.
  • Junior Annie Ell had a team-best 58 assists. She added a pair of aces.
