How It Happened
Rhode Island (0-2) struck first, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sonny Ulliana got things started with a leadoff single down the left field line and Josh Brodeur followed with a base hit to centerfield. A sacrifice bunt by Joe Fortin moved both runners into scoring position before Greg Cavaliere drew a nine-pitch walk to load the bases.
With two away, a bases-loaded infield single by Austin White pushed across Ulliana to make it a 1-0 game. Mark Coley then worked a walk - after being behind in the count 0-2 - sending Brodeur across the plate for the 2-0 advantage.
Lamar (2-0) quickly evened the score in the bottom of the inning however, and pulled ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Rhody put runners in scoring position in the third and fifth innings, but was unable to put any additional runs on the board.
The Cardinals then tacked on five more in the bottom of the sixth for the eventual 8-2 win.
