How it Happened
With gametime temps in the low to mid-30s the Rhody pitchers struggled early on, issuing three walks and hitting seven batters through the first four innings. Maryland took advantage of this, scoring one run in the second and three more in the third, despite recording just one hit in each of those innings.
Rhody used a two-out rally to get on the board in the top of the fifth. Austin White first drew a four-pitch walk with two away. He then stole second, before advancing to third on an infield single by Tino Salgado. Josh Brodeur followed with a base hit through the right side to drive in White and make it a 4-1 game.
The Terps got the run back in the home half of the inning however, and tacked on three more in the bottom of the seventh to stretch their lead to 8-1.
Greg Cavaliere scored on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Jordan Laske in the top of the eighth, but Maryland again got the run back in the bottom of the frame to maintain the seven-run advantage (9-2).
Pinch-hitter Calvin Costner scored the final run of the game for the Rams, leading off the top of the ninth with a pinch-hit walk and later crossing the plate on a bases-loaded fielder's choice ball by Cavaliere.
