How it Happened
It was a frustrating offensive day for Rhode Island in a 6-3 loss in the rubber game of a three-game series at Charlotte Sunday afternoon.

The Rams (9-7) got runners on base throughout the game, but runs were hard to come by. Despite outhitting Charlotte (10-8) 8-6 and drawing seven walks, Rhode Island managed just two runs. URI got runners into scoring position in seven different innings, but only scored twice.

Charlotte struck first with a single run in the bottom of the third. A double and two walks loaded the bases with two outs. Pitcher Trevor Levesque limited the damage, getting a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a sacrifice fly to limit the 49ers to a 1-0 lead.

Tommy Cartnick hit his first career home run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game for the Rams in the top of the fifth. However, Charlotte responded with three of its own in the bottom of the frame without the benefit of a hit. Two errors, two walks, a wild pitch and a balk helped the 49ers put up the round number and take a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Rhode Island loaded the bases with three walks. Tino Salgado lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Sonny Ulliana and cut the deficit to 4-2. However, Charlotte added to its lead with a two-run double by Gino Groover to make it a four-run game.

Rhode Island got one run in the ninth on an RBI single by Ulliana that scored Josh Brodeur, but that was it as Charlotte was able to close out the win.
