How it Happened
Rhode Island held a three-run lead midway through the game, but Connecticut scored seven unanswered runs then held off a late threat to beat the Rams 9-6 Friday afternoon.
The Rams (9-8-1) took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning, thanks in large part to a three-run home run from
Xavier Vargas.
Greg Cavaliere's run-scoring single an inning later put Rhody ahead 5-2 and seemingly with the game in control.
UConn (8-11) went to work, scoring a single run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to tie the score. An error with two outs by Rhode Island in the bottom of the sixth allowed Erik Stock to score and put the Huskies up, 6-5. A pair of home runs – a solo shot by Kyler Fedko and a two-run blast by Chris Winkel extended the lead to 9-5 after eight innings.
Rhode Island did not go without a final fight.
Tommy Cartnick walked,
Joe Fortin was hit by a pitch and
Jordan Laske was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with one out. Cavaliere drove in Cartnick with a two-out single to get the Rams within three runs. However, the rally ended with a strikeout as Connecticut took the series opener.
