How it Happened
After a heartbreaking 13-inning loss in the first game, Rhode Island (10-9-1) rallied late in the second game to salvage a doubleheader split Saturday night at Connecticut (9-12). The Rams fell 3-2 in the opener when the Huskies hit a walk-off home run. Despite the gut punch, Rhody used a three-run rally in the eighth inning of Game 2 to end the weekend with a victory.

Game 1 – Connecticut 3, Rhode Island 2 (13 inn.)
A marathon that featured quality pitching on both sides ended when P Winkel hit a walk-off solo home run with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning. It was the first run scored by UConn in seven innings.

Trailing 2-0, Rhode Island tied the score in the top of the sixth inning. Sonny Ulliana hit a two-out double to left field. Xavier Vargas followed with a two-run home run to right, his second long ball in as many days.

However, those were the only runs the Rams managed in the first game.

Game 2 – Rhode Island 6, Connecticut 4
Xavier Vargas gave the team an early boost with a pair of home runs, however, the Rams trailed 4-3 after six innings.

It was Vargas again starting things for Rhode Island in the top of the eighth inning when he was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout and a fielder's choice, the Rams pieced together a rally. Alex Santos drew a walk and Tino Salgado followed with a single that drove in Mark Coley to tie the score. Salgado and Santos both moved into scoring position on the throw home. Austin White then delivered a single to left center that brought Santos and Salgado in, putting Rhode Island ahead, 6-4.

Pitcher Tristan Levesque did the rest. He hurled 3.0 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. He struck out three batters and allowed no hits in his outing.

Inside the Box Score
