How it Happened
Rhode Island suffered a walk-off loss for the fourth time this season as Army rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Rams 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams (10-10-1) had grabbed its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning.
Mark Coley ended a 10-pitch battle with an RBI double to drive in
Greg Cavaliere with the go-ahead run that out URI in front 2-1.
Needing six outs for the win,
Todd Moxey came on and retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth, getting a foul pop and a pair of groundouts. An inning later Moxey (1-1) ran into trouble as Army (7-11) loaded the bases with no outs. Nick Manesis singled through the left side, the first time all game Army got its leadoff hitter on. Jeremiah Adams followed with a bunt to move Manesis up to second, but the play went for a hit, putting two runners on with nobody out.
Bo Brutti came on in relief of Moxey and got ahead of Cameron Cerruto 0-2, but Cerruto reached on an infield single that drove in Manesis to tie the game. Brodeur made a diving stop on the next batter Sam Ruta and got a force out at the plate for the first out of the inning. However, Hunter Meade snuck a grounder through the left side to drive in the winning run for the Black Knights.
