How it Happened
A four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference as Rhode Island fell at Arizona State 8-6 Saturday night.
After scoring twice in the fifth inning, the Rams (17-18-1) led 5-3 through five-and-a-half innings. However, the Sun Devils (24-14) scored four times in the sixth inning. Ethan Long – who hit his third homer of the season earlier in the game – led the inning off with a single. Jack Moss followed with a single of his own, and both moved along on a passed ball. Hunter Haas doubled to drive in both and tie the score.
A walk to Sam Ferri put runners on the corners with one out. Haas came in with the go-ahead run on an error on a failed pickoff attempt at first base. A Joe Lampe doubled drove Ferri in to cap the inning.
Rhode Island got runners on in each of the last three innings, but the Rams were unable to complete their own rally. For the second consecutive game, URI threatened in the ninth inning.
Xavier Vargas singled and eventually scored on a single by
Mark Coley, bringing the potential tying run to the plate with two outs. However, a ground out ended the contest.
