How it Happened
Rhode Island came up just short in a wild back-and-forth contest, dropping its series finale at Arizona State, 14-13, Sunday afternoon.

After both teams scored twice in the first inning, Arizona State (25-14) struck for three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sam Ferri had an RBI double and Sean McLain had a two-run double of his own to give the Sun Devils the lead.

Rhody (17-19-1) came right back with five runs of its own in the top of the third. Billy Butler launched a two-run home run to left field to get URI within one run. Mark Coley's two-run double drove in Jordan Laske and Alex Ramirez to put the Rams in front by a run, and Coley extended the lead when he scored on an error.

The Rams padded the lead in the sixth inning when Xavier Vargas hit his second home run of the series, a shot to right center. However, with URI ahead 9-5, ASU put together a five-run rally. The big hit in the frame was a three-run double from Ethan Long that put the Sun Devils up, 10-9.

Rhode Island again responded to the game. Laske reached on a one-out walk and moved to scoring position on a walk to Austin White. Josh Brodeur came through with two outs, singling through the left side to drive in Laske and make the score 10-10.

Once again, Arizona State responded, using three hits, a walk and an error to produce a three-run rally and retake the lead, 13-10. Rhode Island got the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the eighth, but a strikeout ended the threat.

ASU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, which proved to be crucial. Trailing 14-10 in its last at bat, Rhode Island continued fighting, getting within one run. Brodeur scored on an RBI single by Sonny Ulliana, and Xavier Vargas followed with his second home run of the game, a bomb to right field that made the score 14-13. However, a strikeout ended the contest.
