How it Happened
After winning the first game in convincing fashion, Rhode Island suffered a tough loss in the second game of a doubleheader at St. Bonaventure Saturday.

The Rams (19-20-1, 7-4 A-10) cruised in the opener 7-1 behind Mike Webb and Xavier Vargas. One out away from a sweep of the day, Rhody lost the second contest when St. Bonaventure (6-20, 5-10 A-10) rallied for a 3-2 win.

Game 1 – Rhode Island 7, St. Bonaventure 1
Mike Webb pitched his fourth complete game in 11 starts to lead Rhode Island to a 7-1 victory. After allowing a run in the bottom of the first, he shut down the Bonnies from there.

Rhody scored twice in the top of the second to take the lead. Mark Coley scored on a balk, and Addison Kopack came in on an RBI single from Calvin McCall. URI broke the game open in the fifth when Xavier Vargas launched his second three-run homer of the series. A two-run single by Joe Fortin in the seventh inning capped the scoring.

Game 2 – St. Bonaventure 3, Rhode Island 2
Solo home runs from Jordan Laske and Mark Coley had Rhode Island leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. After the first two Bonnies batters were retired to start the seventh, St. Bonaventure strung together three singles and a walk to rally for the win.

With two outs, Branden Myers singled up the middle before pinch hitter Chet Szablewski dropped a single to shallow center. Kevin Higgins worked a walk to load the bases. Jackson DeJohn sent a shallow fly ball to right field. Coley chased the ball down and went into a slide for what momentarily appeared to be a great game-ending catch. However, the ball fell to the ground, allowing Myers and Szablewski to score, giving the Bonnies the win.

Inside the Box Score
  • Xavier Vargas had a home run, single, walk and two runs scored on the day.
  • The home run was his 10th of the season, making him just the eighth player in program history to reach double digits in one season. He is the first to do so since 2017, when Mike Corin hit a team-record 19 and Matt O'Neil had 13.
  • Mike Webb improved to 5-1 with his victory. He has 52 strikeouts with just 19 walks in 71.1 innings of work.
  • In the second game, Justin Cherry provided a solid start, allowing just one run on three hits in 5.0 innings. Cherry also struck out eight batters.
  • Addison Kopack singled twice, walked twice and scored a run on the day.
  • Jordan Laske's solo shot in the second game was his first long ball of the year and the first of his career.
  • Mark Coley's home run came with two outs in the top of the seventh, giving Rhody a 2-1 lead.
  • Coley has scored at least once in five straight games.
