KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island Athletics Department is saddened to learn of the passing of longtime radio analyst and URI Athletics Hall of Famer Don Kaull.
Kaull, who officially retired from doing men's basketball broadcasts before the start of the 2022-23 season, spent 35 years sitting court side and calling games for the Rams.
Inducted into the URI Hall of Fame in 1985, Kaull was a team captain and a three-year letter winner for the Rams from 1964-67. He came to Kingston to play for the legendary Ernie Calverly after graduating as the all-time leading scorer for Rogers High School in Newport, R.I.
"I am not sure there is anyone more synonymous with URI Basketball than Don Kaull," Rhode Island Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn said. "From the first day I arrived on campus, Don's kindness was overwhelming. He wore his love of the University of Rhode Island on his sleeve and was beloved by everyone he came in contact with. I am truly going to miss him. My prayers and condolences to Caroline and their children and grandchildren."
Kaull's longtime broadcast partner Steve McDonald remembered the kindness with which he treated others.
"Even more than his tremendous play on the basketball court for URI in the 1960s and his outstanding broadcasting career stretching more than three decades, it is Don's kindness that stands out the most," McDonald said. "Don always had a kind word and a generous heart for everyone he met. He represented the University of Rhode Island to the highest standard."
Kaull is survived by his wife Caroline, their three children and several grandchildren.
