How it Happened
Rhode Island (0-7) got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead on the top of the first inning when
Xavier Vargas doubled down the right field line to drive in
Addison Kopack. Kopack had singled through the left side to lead off the inning, and then stole second with two away to set up Vargas' RBI double. The following inning,
Anthony DePino sent a solo shot over the left center wall to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Auburn (8-2) evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, thanks to a two-run homer by Sonny DiChiara. The Tigers added another run in the fourth, and two more in the sixth to pull ahead 5-2.
Â
Rhody's best chance came in the top of the eighth, where
Eric Genther,
Jack Cucinotta and
Xavier Vargas opened the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles. However, Auburn's Blake Burkhalter struck out the next three hitters – on just 11 pitches – to end the threat. The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the frame to cap off the 7-2 victory.
