Baseball Blanked Twice in Doubleheader at Auburn

How it Happened
Rhode Island was shutout twice in a Saturday doubleheader at Auburn. The Rams combined for just six hits through 16 innings, while being outscored by a combined 28 runs to zero.

Auburn plated runs in all but one inning of the first game, easing its way to the 16-0 win.

The Rams loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but were unable to get on the board. Auburn, meanwhile, scored one in the first, one in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to lead 7-0 before Rhode Island even advanced another runner to scoring position. That happened in the top of the fifth, when Tommy Cartnick and Addison Kopack strung together back-to-back singles, but an inning-ending groundout stranded both.

Rhody managed just one hit the rest of the way – a seventh-inning single by Alex Ramirez – while the Tigers continued to pile onto their lead. Auburn combined for eight runs in its last four trips to the plate for the eventual 16-0 victory.

In the second game, Auburn's Trace Bright took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the Tigers provided him with plenty of run support early on – 12 runs over the first three innings to be exact.

Bright recorded 17 consecutive outs before freshman Brody McKenzie broke up the no-hit bid with a single up the middle. He was the lone Ram to reach base in the game as Bright and Cade Granzow combined for the seven-inning shutout. The Auburn duo racked up 10 strikeouts with zero walks.

Game 1: Inside the Box Score
  • Redshirt sophomore Addison Kopack had two of Rhody's five hits in the game.
  • Sophomore Tommy Cartnick also reached base twice, on a single and a walk.
  • Freshman Eric Genther was hit by a pitch in two of his four plate appearances.
  • Fifth-year senior Xavier Vargas and junior Alex Ramirez each singled once for the Rams.
  • Junior Domenic Picone took the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits and five walks over a 2.2-inning start.
  • Rhode Island's pitching staff combined to allow 10 hits and issue 12 walks. Conversely, Auburn held URI to just five hits and two walks.
Game 2: Inside the Box Score
  • Freshman Brody McKenzie recorded the lone hit of the game for the Rams – a fifth-inning single that gave the Rams their first and only base-runner of the game.
  • Junior Zach Fernandez was charged with the loss. He allowed four hits and three walks in one third of an inning, and was responsible for Auburn's first eight runs.
  • Freshman Ryan Andrade tossed three-innings of no-hit relief while recording three strikeouts.
