How it Happened
A late comeback attempt came up short as Rhode Island dropped the opener of its three-game series to Massachusetts, 6-3, Friday afternoon.
The Rams (8-24, 4-3 Atlantic 10) trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Addison Kopack was hit by a pitch and
Eric Genther singled to get the first two batters on. After
Joe Fortin reached on a fielder's choice that retired Genter,
Calvin McCall loaded the based when he was hit by a pitch, and
Rob Butler delivered a two-out single up the middle to drive in Kopack and Fortin and get Rhody within a run.
After UMass (16-10-1, 5-1 A-10) added a run in the top of the seventh, Rhode Island had the makings of another rally in the bottom of the eight. Genther began the frame with a walk and moved up 90 feet when
Anthony DePino singled. With the potential tying runs on, the Rams came up empty as a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a fielder's choice grounder ended the threat.
The Minutemen padded the lead with another run in the top of the ninth. URI continued to battle in the bottom of the ninth.
Brody McKenzie led off with a walk and came around when Kopack doubled to the right field corner. With the tying run at the plate, a groundout ended Rhody's last chance.
