How it Happened
Eric Genther had a pair of home runs and drove in five to spark Rhode Island to an 8-5 win over Massachusetts Saturday afternoon.
Â
After UMass put up a pair of runs in the top of the first when Drew DeMartino lifted a two-run homer to centerfield, Rhode Island (9-24, 5-3 A-10) came right back in the bottom of the first when Genther blooped a soft liner to center. A diving attempt by Ryan Coleman missed, and the ball bounced all the way to the wall. Genther,
Alex Ramirez and
Addison Kopack all scored on what wound up being an inside-the-park home run.
The Rams added three more in the bottom of the second inning.
Jordan Laske delivered a two-run single to center that drove in
Calvin McCall and
Justin Cherry. Genther later chopped a single through the left side to bring Laske around to score, giving URI a 6-2 lead.
UMass (16-11-1, 5-2 A-10) got single runs in the third and fourth to trim Rhody's lead to 6-4. In the bottom of the fifth however, Genther struck again as he led off the inning with a solo shot to right field. The Rams added another run when
Anthony DePino doubled then scored on a base hit by
Joe Fortin.
UMass added a run in the top of the ninth, but was unable to get any closer.
