How it Happened
After three scoreless innings, Rhode Island took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when
Addison Kopack scored on a sac-fly by
Joe Fortin.
Â
Trystan Levesque kept things moving along for the Rams, allowing UMass just five hits before exiting with the 1-0 lead after six innings of work.
Â
The Minutemen managed to load the bases off reliever
Broc French in the top of the seventh, but
Zach Fernandez took over and got the Rams out of the jam. After a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles, Fernandez replaced French and fanned Mike Gervasi and Drew DeMartino – UMass' 3-4 hitters – then got an inning-ending groundout to protect URI's 1-0 lead.
Â
Rhode Island was finally able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the inning as a
Jordan Laske sandwiched a single between a pair of walks to
Calvin McCall and
Alex Ramirez. That set up Kopack's bases-loaded sacrifice fly that made it a 2-0 game.
Â
Fernandez then fired a 1-2-3 eighth inning to get the Rams back to the plate, where Fortin singled and stole second. With two away, McCall drove a ball into left center, for what looked to be an inning-ending fly out. However, UMass' center fielder Kevin Skagerlind and left fielder Nolan Tichy collided while attempting to field the ball, which allowed McCall to reach second and Fortin to cross the plate for the eventual 3-0 victory.
With their third consecutive Atlantic 10 series win, URI is now tied with - UMass and Saint Joseph's -Â for second place in the conference standings with a 6-3 league record.Â
