How it Happened
Leading 1-0 after two innings of play, Rhode Island stretched the lead to 8-0 in the top of the third.
Addison Kopack got the scoring started with a three-run homer that also plated
Calvin McCall and
Jordan Laske. The Rams' next four runs all came with two outs as
Anthony DePino hit a solo shot, and
Justin Cherry,
Rob Butler and
Tommy Cartnick followed with back-to-back-to back singles to load the bases. McCall – in his second at-bat of the inning – sent a single to right field to drive in Cherry and Butler and push URI's lead to 7-0. A successful double steal – where McCall took second and Cartnick crossed the plate – then made it an 8-0 game.
Â
The Riverhawks got four runs back in the bottom of the inning, but were held to just one hit in their next five trips to the plate.
Â
Meanwhile, Kopack scored again in the fourth – on an RBI single by DePino – and then used a sacrifice fly to push across
Brody McKenzie in the fifth for the 10-4 advantage.
Â
UMass Lowell scored its fifth and final run of the game with two away in the bottom of the ninth.
