How it Happened
Rhode Island managed just three hits but took advantage of its scoring opportunities in a 7-5 road win over first-place Davidson Friday night.
The Rams went up 2-0 in the first inning as
Jordan Laske scored on a wild pitch and
Addison Kopack was driven in by
Joe Fortin.
URI doubled its lead in the top of the second on runs by Laske and
Brody McKenzie. The Rhody duo led off the inning with back-to-back walks before both scoring on a throwing error by Davidson's Nolan DeVos. That was the end of the day for the Wildcats' starter, who faced 11 batters but recorded just three outs.
Davidson got two runs back in the bottom of the second, scored another in the third, and took its first lead of the game (5-4) in the bottom of the fourth.
A pair of solo home runs by Kopack and
Anthony DePino put the Rams back on top in the fifth inning, and
Joe Fortin scored on a wild pitch to add an insurance run.
The Wildcats loaded the bases in the sixth, and again in the seventh, but
Bryan Kraus twice worked his way out of the jam, and then followed with a 1-2-3 eighth and ninth to lock up the 7-5 win.
