How it Happened
Rhode Island got its first complete game of the season as
Sean Sposato went the distance in a 4-1 win at George Washington.
Â
Jack Cucinotta led off the game with a solo shot to put Rhody up 1-0 in the top of the first.
Anthony DePino followed suit in the top of the second, leading off the inning with his 13th homer of the season to give the Rams a 2-0 lead.
Â
GW scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the second, on an RBI single by Jon Bruno.
Â
Thanks to some big defensive plays, URI kept the score locked at 2-1 until the top of the eighth when a no-doubter by
Alex Ramirez gave the Rams a pair of insurance runs. Cucinotta also scored on what was Ramirez's first home run of the season, putting Rhody on top 4-1.
Â
Sposato retired each of the last 12 hitters he faced to close the door on the Colonials and clinch the series-opening win.
Inside the Box Score
- Sean Sposato threw the first complete game of his career, needing just 104 pitches to get through nine innings. He struck out four and allowed just one run on six hits.
- Sposato held GW's 1-4 hitters to an 0-for-13 showing at the plate.
- All four Rhode Island runs were scored on homers as grad student Jack Cucinotta, freshman Anthony DePino and junior Alex Ramirez all went deep for the Rams.
- DePino's home run was his 13th of the season, tying him for the second most in a single season at URI. He is six homers away from the program record of 19, which was set by Mike Corin in 2017.
- The Rams have now hit multiple home runs in 12 games this season.
- With 40 team homers so far this season, the 2022 Rams rank fifth in program history. The all-time record for home runs in a season is 54, which was set in 2009.
- Freshman Eric Genther was the only other player to record a hit in the game. He singled twice to extend his reached-base streak to a team-best 21 games.
