How it Happened
Jack Cucinotta's second home run of the series – this time, a three-run shot – put the Rams up 3-0 in the top of the second.
Anthony DePino then led off the third with a double down the left field line and later made it 4-0 when he scored on a sacrifice fly by
Rob Butler.
Â
George Washington managed just six base-runners through the first six innings, but was unable to advance anyone past second base. The Colonials finally got to Rhody's
Trystan Levesque in the bottom of the seventh when a two-run homer by Ty Acker made it a 4-2 game.
Â
Rhody used a two-out rally to add another run in the top of the ninth. DePino drew a walk with two away, then advanced to second on a base hit by
Justin Cherry. Butler was then walked to load the bases before DePino crossed the plate on a wild pitch, putting URI up 5-2.
Â
GW cut it to 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth – on an RBI single by Derek Ripp – but was unable to get any closer.
Â
Rhode Island has now won four of five Atlantic 10 series. With a 9-6 conference record, the Rams are in a three-way tie (with Saint Joseph's and Saint Louis) for third place in the A-10 standings.
