How it Happened
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but a successful first-and-third double steal – where
Eric Genther took second and
Addison Kopack crossed the plate – evened the score in the bottom of the inning. Kopack singled through the left side in his next at-bat, driving in
Tino Salgado to put the Rams up 2-1.
The Bobcats reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth, thanks to a three-run homer by Gianni Arici.
Rhody got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame when
Calvin McCall scored on a
Tommy Cartnick single, after leading the inning off with a triple to right center.
The following inning, a leadoff homer for
Alex Ramirez tied the score at 4-4. Kopack was then walked and Genther singled before
Anthony DePino was hit by a pitch. That set up
Rob Butler's bases-loaded single that pushed across Kopack and gave Rhody a 5-4 lead.
Quinnipiac stormed back in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs before ever recording an out to go up 10-5.
The Rams got to work in the bottom of the frame and began chipping away at the deficit once again. After Ramirez and Kopack drew back-to-back one-out walks, Genther singled to center to drive in Ramirez and move Kopack to third. Kopack then scored on a wild pitch and Genther came home on an RBI single by DePino to make it a 10-8 game.
URI kept things rolling in the bottom of the seventh, putting three more runs on the board to pull ahead 11-10. Salgado was hit with one away, and
Joe Fortin followed with a double, putting two runners in scoring position for Ramirez. The Rhody second-baseman tripled to right center to tie the game, and went on to score the go-ahead run on a sac-fly by Kopack.
Rhode Island then used a two-out rally to add a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Salgado got things started with a double to left before scoring on a ground-rule double by Fortin, who later scored on a base hit by Kopack to give the Rams an 13-11 advantage.
Quinnipiac battled until the end, using a two-run, ninth-inning homer to cut the Rams' lead to 13-12. A single and walk then put two more runners on base, but
Bo Brutti got a game-ending strikeout to strand both Bobcats and secure the victory for Rhode Island.
