Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader with Fordham

How it Happened
Rhode Island split a Friday doubleheader with visiting Fordham, falling 5-4 in the opener but bouncing back with a 10-6 win in Game 2. Eric Genther (.625), Jack Cucinotta (.556) and Addison Kopack (.556) all hit above .500 on the day. The Rhody trio combined for three doubles, two triples, two homers, seven RBI and nine runs scored.

Fordham scored twice in the opening inning of Game 1, and added two more runs in the top of the fourth to lead 4-0. Rhody got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Anthony DePino scored from first on a single by Joe Fortin.

The visiting Rams then scored on a passed ball to make it 5-1 in the top of the fifth. Rhody continued to chip away at the deficit – using a fifth-inning RBI single from Kopack, a seventh-inning RBI triple from Cucinotta and an eighth-inning homer by Genther – to make it a 5-4 game, but that was as close as it got.

In Game 2, Kopack sent a first-inning homer out of the park to put Rhody on the board early. He later drove in Cucinotta in the bottom of the third for the 2-0 URI lead.

Fordham did all of its damage in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs on just one hit. DePino then homered to lead off the bottom of the inning, making it a 6-3 game.

Kopack later doubled with one away in the fifth and eventually scored on a single to right center by Genther, cutting Fordham's lead to 6-4.

Rhody took over the lead in the bottom of the seventh. There, Kopack scored on a bases-loaded single by Fortin, Genther scored on a sac-fly by Jordan Laske and DePino scored on a base hit by Justin Cherry.

The top of the lineup added three more runs for Rhode Island in the eighth, as Cucinotta doubled to set up Alex Ramirez's two-run homer and Kopack tripled to set up another RBI single for Genther. Zach Fernandez went on to retire Fordham in order in the top of the ninth to finish off the 10-6 win.
