Â
How it Happened
George Mason got on the board first, plating a pair of runs in the top of the second on a two-out, two-run single by Carsen Pracht.
Â
With one away in the fourth,
Eric Genther was hit by a pitch and
Anthony DePino was walked to put two runners on. After a strike out by
Joe Fortin,
Jordan Laske singled to right to push across Genther. Laske then stole second, and a bad throw to the base allowed DePino to score the tying run.
Â
Rhode Island pulled ahead 3-2 the following inning when
Jack Cucinotta scored on a wild pitch.
Â
From there, neither team was able to get much going until the top of the ninth. Rhode Island appeared to be in control, retiring two of the first three hitters to come to the plate, but George Mason had other plans. The Patriots went on a tear and scored five unanswered runs – including back-to-back homers by Jordan Smith and Danny Hosley – to pull ahead 7-3.
Â
With the wind taken completely out of their sails, the Rams went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
