How it Happened
Rhode Island (6-5) dropped its second straight game for the first time this season with a loss at St. John's Sunday afternoon.
The Red Storm (5-6) used a 7-0 run to build a 10-5 lead at 5:50 of the first. A 3-pointer by Teisha Hyman stopped the bleeding at the first media timeout (10-8) but Unique Drake sunk two straight treys for SJU to gain a 16-12 lead after one.
The Rams opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run backed by buckets from Mayé Touré and Anaelle Dutat to tie it at 16. Rhody's defense limited the Red Storm to their first field goal at 5:44 of the period (18-16), and four points overall in the quarter. The Rams offensive struggles continued as they committed three straight turnovers with under four minutes left until the break. Both teams were without a basket in the remaining two minutes of the period and went into halftime tied at 20.
After the break, Rhody's stingy defense forced the Red Storm to back-to-back shot clock violations. The Rams scored two baskets from Sophie Sene and Dutat to build a 28-25 lead, but Ber'Nyah Mayo scored seven straight points to keep St. John's in it. It was a rock fight for the teams and they went into the final period knotted at 32.
The fourth period was all St. John's, as the hosts used a 13-2 run to build the largest lead of the game (53-40) and never looked back for the double-digit win.
