How it Happened
Rhode Island's shooting struggles doomed the Rams in a 51-50 loss at Providence Wednesday night.
The Rams (6-4)Â shot a season-low 26.2 percent from the floor in the loss. Rhode Island made the first basket of the night to go up 2-0, but the Friars went on a 10-0 tear to build a lead. Rhody used a 8-2 run to get themselves within three (19-16), including five straight points from Teisha Hyman. The Friars (4-5) connected on a layup to close the quarter up 21-16.
Rhode Island's offense continued to struggle in the second quarter, connecting on just three field goals, two being from beyond the arc. Although the Rams couldn't get things going from the field, they were able to connect at the free throw line, with eight points coming from the charity stripe. The Rhody defense made the Friars struggle from the floor as well, as the hosts shot 27.3 percent in the second after connecting on 47.4 percent in the first period. Rhode Island used a 15-5 run to close out the second quarter and go into the break with a 32-28 lead.Â
The rock fight continued in the second half, with Rhody's first field goal not coming until 5:32 in the third quarter. Hyman completed a successful classic three-point play to give the Rams a 35-31 lead. As the Rams struggled from the floor, the defense held the Friars without a field goal for four-plus minutes (37-31). After the drought, Providence used an 8-0 run to take a 39-37 lead, and the teams ended the third tied at 42.
Both teams didn't score more than double-digits in the final period of play. With two minutes left, Emily Archibald hit a 3-pointer to put the Friars up 51-50. The Rams were sent to the line but couldn't connect on either try at the charity stripe. In the final minute, Rhode Island had five opportunities at a shot, but nothing fell for the Rams, sending them home with the loss.
