How It Happened
Rhode Island (1-3) had an offensive awakening Saturday evening, getting 12 hits as it blanked Georgia State 7-0 for its first victory of the season. Earlier in the day, the Rams fell 12-3 to Purdue Fort Wayne at the Bob Heck Classic in Atlanta.
Game 1 – Purdue Fort Wayne 12, Rhode Island 3
A steady attack helped Purdue Fort Wayne cruise to its second win over Rhody in as many days. The Mastodons (3-7) scored twice in the first, twice in the second, six times in the third and two more in the fourth. They used 12 hits, including three home runs to create the offense.
Game 2 – Rhode Island 7, Georgia State 0
Rhode Island broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third when
Elena Gonzalez delivered a two-out, two-run double that scored
Casey Miller and
Hannah Hernandez. It was the first of six doubles in the game for the Rams. With URI scoring in four consecutive innings to steadily increase its lead,
Liz Lynchard went the distance for the shutout.

- Senior Liz Lynchard (1-0) struck out five batters and allowed just four singles while recording her first win of the season.
- Sophomore Leilyn Alvarez had three hits against Georgia State, including a pair of doubles. She scored once and drove in a run.
- Freshman Casey Miller was 3-for-6 with a walk and three runs scored. She has hit safely in each of the first four games of the year.
- Senior Cassie Swenson also extended her hitting streak to four games with a single in each contest.
- Junior Elena Gonzalez doubled, singled twice, drove in two and scored once on the day.
- Senior Rachel Zingerman - who has reached safely in all four games - doubled, singled, scored twice and stole two bases.
- She is 3-for-3 on steals thus far.
- The Rams were 4-for-5 on steal attempts in the two games combined.
- Freshman Kylie Bulinski had a two-run double in the Georgia State game..
- Despite a 1-3 record so far, the Rams are batting .305 as a team through four games.
