How it Happened
A furious comeback by Rhode Island got the Rams to overtime, but George Washington took over in the extra session to hand the Rams a tough 89-80 defeat Wednesday night.
Rhode Island (8-19, 4-11 Atlantic 10) trailed by 11 points with less than six minutes remaining in regulation after Maximus Edwards hit a layup to give the Colonials a 68-57 lead. From there, Rhode Island went on a 14-1 run.
Brandon Weston started the late rally with a second-chance basket.
Sebastian Thomas knocked down a 3-point shot, and
Malik Martin scored on a feed from Thomas to get the deficit down to 69-64 with 4:15 to go.
After the final media timeout,
Jalen Carey hit a layup with 3:44 to go to get the Rams within three points. Neither side scored over the next 3:24 until
Ishmael Leggett made two free throws to make it a one-point game. After a defensive stop, Leggett came right back and drained a jumper in the paint to put Rhode Island ahead, 70-69 with 53 seconds to go. Thomas made 1-of-2 at the free throw line to make it a two-point lead, but Brendan Adams hit a drive to tie the score with 20 seconds to go. Rhode Island held for the final shot of regulation, but Leggett's 3-point attempt went off the rim.
Weston scored the first points of overtime when he took the opening tip in for a layup. From there, George Washington (14-14, 8-7 A-10) went on a 9-1 run that featured seven points from Bishop, the A-10's leading scorer. A pair of
Malik Martin free throws stopped the momentum for a moment and got URI within four points, but that was as close as the score got. Rhode Island dropped its sixth straight contest. Â
