LATHAM, N.Y. - Rhode Island came up just short at Siena Sunday, falling 4-3 in a back-and-forth affair that was decided by a superset tiebreaker in the final match of the day.
Rhody got off to a strong start when junior
Valentina Cvackova and freshman
Sophie Herrman paired up for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. However, Siena (1-2) won at the other two doubles spots to claim the team point.
The Rams (2-2) got straight-set singles wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 spots. Cvackova defeated Reegan Mullaney 6-1, 6-2. Herrman won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and
Klara Nelander's 6-3, 6-0 win over Emma Boggiali had Rhode Island within one point of clinching the match.
However, Laia Giralt's win at No. 1 singled even the score for Siena. That meant the team result was decided at No. 6 singles between URI's
Paulina Loredo and Siena's Madeline De Faber-Schumacher. Loredo jumped out early, taking the first set, 6-1. The second set went to a tiebreak, with De Faber-Schumacher squeezing out a 7-6 (7-5) set to force the super-tiebreak. Though the action continued to go back and forth, De Faber-Schumacher prevailed 10-6 to clinch the match.
Rhode Island hosts Stonehill at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport on Saturday, Feb. 11. The match begins at 4 p.m.
