Rams Outlast Washington 9-6 to Take Series Opener

How it Happened
Rhode Island won a back-and-forth battle, rallying from a two-run deficit to knock off Washington 9-6 Friday night.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning, and the host Huskies took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of third. An RBI double from Eric Genther and a two-run homer by Anthony DePino put Rhody (4-9) back in front, 4-2. Washington (12-4) scored twice in the bottom of the fourth and two more times in the fifth inning to move ahead, 6-4.

From there, the Rhode Island bats took over. The Rams got two runs in the top of the sixth when Alex Ramirez delivered a two-out single with the bases loaded. Addison Kopack scored first, and then Genther came around on a throwing error by the Huskies. An inning later, Genther drove in Kopack with a single to give URI a 7-6 lead. In the top of the eighth, Rob Butler and Mark Coley drilled back-to-back solo home runs, adding a pair of insurance runs.

Rhode Island's bullpen held Washington scoreless over the final four innings. Jeremy Urena, Broc French and Ryan Andrade each provided 1.1 innings without allowing a run to help Rhode Island snap a six-game losing streak.
