How it Happened
A five-run fourth-inning by Washington broke the game open as the Huskies knocked off Rhode Island 12-6 Saturday afternoon.
Rhode Island (4-10) got a home run from
Mark Coley to lead of the game. However, Washington scored single runs in each of the first three innings to build a 3-1 lead.
The Rams got a second home run when
Addison Kopack began the top of the fourth with a solo shot. After
Michael Anderson reached on an error and advanced on a groundout,
Billy Butler drove him in with a single through the right side, knotting the score at 3-3. From there, it was all Washington (13-4). Michael Snyder drilled a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to put the Huskies back in front. Cam Clayton added an RBI double and Will Simpson followed with a two-run double to make the score 8-3 before the inning ended.
Â
Two runs each in the sixth and eighth innings for Washington served to put the game out of reach. Rhode Island had just two hits from the fifth through eighth innings. The Rams put up three runs in the top of the ninth after loading the bases with no outs.
Ryan King was hit by a pitch and
Connor Grotyohann and
Nicholas Toro drew back-to-back walks. A fielder's choice grounder by
Calvin McCall brought King in. Ryan Marchetti lined a double to the corner in left to plate Grotyohann and moved McCall around to third.
Michael Anderson just missed a home run, launching a long fly ball to the warning track in center that was caught to end the game.
