How It Happened
Rhode Island (6-11) swept a doubleheader against Marist Friday, winning its first two home games of the season. Rhody took the opener 9-3 and then got an outstanding pitching performance from
Trystan Levesque and
Ryan Andrade to secure to sweep.
Game 1 - Rhode Island 9, Marist 3
Marist (3-17) got on the board with a single run in the top of the second, but Rhody took control with a four-run home half of the third.
Jack Hopko started the rally with a walk, and
Rob Butler followed with a single up the middle. A double to center field by
Mark Coley drove in Hopko to tie the game. A walk to
Addison Kopack loaded the bases, and Eric Genter lined a sacrifice fly to center to bring Butler home and give URI its first lead of the game.
Billy Butler padded the lead with a two-run single up the middle that drove in Coley and Kopack for a 4-1 lead.
Marist cut into the lead with a run in the fifth, but
Anthony DePino got the run right back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single to score
Michael Anderson. Rhody put the game away with three runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh.
Addison Kopack delivered
Jack Hopko with a sacrifice fly and
Eric Genther had a two-run single in the sixth inning.
Mark Coley added an RBI single to drive in DePino in the seventh as URI won the opener with room to spare.
Game 2 - Rhode Island 4, Marist 1 (7 inn.)
Trystan Levesque was masterful in the second game, striking out eight batters over six innings of work. After allowing a solo home run to Danny Moshie in the second inning, Levesque shut Marist down the rest of the way.
Anthony DePino responded immediately after the Moshie homer. Leading off the bottom of the second, DePino launched a bomb to center that cleared the tall pines that form the backdrop of Beck Field to knot the score.
Billy Butler delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to drive in
Eric Genther with the go-ahead run.
Rhody padded the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. After
Michael Anderson drove in pinch runner
David Marchetti with a single, the Rams executed a double steal. With
Mark Coley on third, Anderson got himself into a run down between first and second. Eventually Coley broke for home and beat the throw, putting the Rams up 4-1.
Ryan Andrade came on for Levesque in the bottom of the seventh and retired Marist 1-2-3 to pick up his second save of the season.
Inside the Box Scores
- Sophomore Anthony DePino was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, two walks and a hit batsmen. He reached safely in six of seven plate appearances and also stole a base.
- His home run was the 19th of DePino's career, putting him in sole possession of 10th place in program history.
- Leadoff hitter Mark Coley continued to get the job done, going 4-for-8 with a double, three runs scored, two RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
- As a team, Rhode Island was 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts for the day.
- Sophomore Rob Butler singled, walked twice and scored twice in the opener.
- Redshirt freshman Nicholas Toro singled, walked and was hit by a pitch in three plate appearances in the second game. He also scored once.
- Junior Trystan Levesque (3-2) scattered five hits and two walks while striking out eight over 6.0 innings of work.
- Redshirt junior Sean Sposato (1-2) got his first win of the season with a strong outing in the opener. He allowed two runs on eight hits while fanning six batters and walking just one.
- Redshirt junior Broc French delivered 2.0 scoreless innings of relief in the first game.
- Rhody's pitchers allowed just four earned runs over 16.0 innings of work for the day.
What's Next
Rhode Island goes for the series sweep on Sunday with a single game against Marist. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
