How It Happened
Rhode Island's offense pounded out 12 hits and defeated Marist 13-7 to complete a three-game sweep of the Red Foxes Sunday afternoon.
Rhode Island (7-11) used the long ball to establish an early lead. After Eric Genter doubled and
Billy Butler walked to start the bottom of the second,
Anthony DePino launched a three-run homer to left center. Later in the inning,
Connor Grotyohann reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored when
Mark Coley reached on an error, making it a 4-0 lead.
Â
In the fourth inning,
Rob Butler walked and Grotyohann singled off the pitcher's leg. With one out, a failed pickoff attempt allowed Butler to come around and score. Grotyohann advanced to second on the play.
Michael Anderson lined a ground rule double to right center to drive in Grotyohann and increase the lead to 6-0.
Â
Marist (3-18) cut into the lead with a four-run rally in the top of the sixth inning. All of the damage came with two down, as Rhody starter
Braeden Perry got a line out and strikeout to get the inning started. A single and walk brought
Cole Carroll in from the bullpen. A walk to the first batter he faced loaded the bases before Danny Moshier and Colin Mackle had back-to-back doubles. Moshier's double cleared the bases and Mackle brought Moshier around to make the score 6-4.
Â
Rhody came right back with three in the home half of the sixth.
Addison Kopack drove in
Rob Butler with a sacrifice fly. Anderson had an RBI single that brought Grotyohann in. Genther had an RBI groundout that drove in
Mark Coley to push the lead back to 9-4.
Â
The Red Foxes did not go quietly. In the top of the seventh, Marist scored three more times. Bayram Hot singled and Brian Hart followed with a double to put a pair in scoring position. Niko Amory's sacrifice fly drove in Hot. Ethan Conrad tripled to bring Hart around, and Marco Ali singled through the right side to drive in Conrad and make the score 9-7. URI's
Broc French came out of the bullpen and retired the first two batters he faced to end the rally.
From there, the Rams tacked on four runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away. Grotyohann had a two-run double. Kopack doubled him home, and then Anderson added an RBI single to put the game away.
