How It Happened
No. 19 Virginia had too much firepower for Rhode Island as the Cavaliers swept a doubleheader, winning 12-6 and 13-0 Saturday afternoon.
URI (3-5) held its own in the opener after a rough first inning, but could not complete the comebacker. In the second game, the Rhody offense never got going.
Game 1 - No. 19 Virginia 12, Rhode Island 6
A seven-run first inning was the difference as the host Cavaliers batted around in the home half of the first. From there, Rhode Island outscored Virginia 6-5 over the final eight innings, but the initial hole was too big to climb out of. The Rams got four home runs in the opener, as
Billy Butler,
Addison Kopack,
Eric Genther and
Anthony DePino all went yard.
Game 2 - No. 19 Virginia 13, Rhode Island 0
Virginia starter Brian Edgington was dominant over 6.0 innings of work, striking out 10 batters. He allowed just three singles and two walks, and the Cavalier offense scored four times in the second inning and five times in the fourth to put the second game of the doubleheader away early.
